Scientists have found a colossal black hole near the dawn of time
The James Webb Space Telescope has detected the most distant supermassive black hole to date — a space vortex so far from home, it is in one of the first galaxies of the universe. Black holes were more than that a theory 50 years ago — a strange mathematical answer to a physics problem — but even astronomers at the top of their field weren't entirely convinced they existed. Today, they are not only oversized black holes accepted science, they get theirs photos taken from a collection of huge, synchronized radio dishes on Earth. Webb, space's leading infrared observatory, is also doing its part to reveal how these mysterious behemoths form in the first place. The supermassive black hole was found at its center GN-z11an extremely bright galaxy that was alive when the universe was only about 430 million years old, a fraction of its current age, which is closer to 14 billion. Black holes are some of the most unexplored phenomena in space. They don't have surfaces, like a planet or a star. Instead, they have a limit called "event horizon”, or a point of no return. But how oversize black holes, millions to billions of times more massive than the sun, the form is even more elusive than typical stellar black holes. Many astrophysicists and cosmologists believe that these invisible giants are hidden at the center of almost all galaxies. Recent Hubble Space Telescope observations have strengthened the theory that supermassive black holes start in the dusty cores of star-exploding galaxies, where new stars are rapidly accreted, but scientists are still teasing this.

A team of scientists using Webb was able to discern that GN-z11 has a central black hole with few elements. "We found extremely dense gas that is common near supermassive black holes that are accreting gas," said Roberto Maiolino, the principal investigator at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. in a statement. "These were the first clear signatures that GN-z11 hosts a matter-eating black hole."

The team then found signs of electrically charged chemicals typically found near active supermassive black holes. Scientists also observed the ancient galaxy blasting a strong wind, which is also associated with supermassive black holes with voracious appetites. With all these clues together, the team believes that GN-z11 has a central black hole with a mass as large as 2 million suns.
Another group of researchers is studying this ancient galaxy for evidence of first-generation stars, the so-called "Population III"stars. The stars with confusing names they are believed to have formed in the early universe, before the existence of elements heavier than helium.




The James Webb Space Telescope is also doing its part to reveal how these mysterious behemoths form in the first place.
